This is a turbulent year. We are convinced now more than ever that we need animation and that animators, both local and international, need us. We host this platform for you to get inspired, to speak up, learn, and connect. We are proud and extremely grateful to be a Hauptstadtkulturfonds funded festival this year. Berlin indeed is the best place to host a festival dedicated to the art and craft of animation. FAB’s first edition took place in 2017, and back then, it consisted of one evening where Berlin- based animators screened their films. This event sold out entirely. At the sight of the huge line extending down the street, it became clear to us that there was indeed an unmet demand to what we were offering on a minimum level back on that one night. Now, we grow happier and merrier by the year. Many have reached out tous over the years, our team has grown, one screening night has transformed into three full festival days with competitions in six categories and a diverse range of events. We are proud to feature animators and guests from all over the world. To our vibrant community, to all partners, guests, and appreciators of animation alike: Thank you for being here with us and making FAB ever more colorful, inspiring, and inclusive.

We wish you all an exciting FAB 2020!

This year the opener for our festival was created under the direction of our special guest Anete Melece. The animation was done by Stefan Holaus, the music was composed by Martin Waespe.

Festival Opener Student Competition

Also this year there is a cooperation with FAB and the animation course of the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF. The fabulous opener for the student competition was animated under the supervision of Alberto Couceiro by the students Guilia Falciani, Sine Juhl, Anna Dokuchaeva, Emilia Zieser, Clara Schulze. The film music was composed by Valeriia Khazan.

Information on the current situation

We wanted to let you know that we’re observing & staying put on the latest news and public decisions on COVID-19. As of now, we’re trying our best to make FAB happen as planned between 9-11 Oct 2020, but we hope you understand that we’re obliged to handle the situation responsibly and according to official guidelines. We will keep you posted.

Please also note the corona rules of our venue (in German).

Stay safe and healthy,
Your FAB team.

FAB’s third edition took place on the 21st of September at Berliner Kino Central. 27 films made it into the selection and were screened in three competition categories. The very best films were awarded with handmade trophies and cash prizes. This year’s festival programme displayed a wide array of activities in addition to the competition: an Italy-focused screening, a masterclass with animation Artist Roberto Biadi, pitching sessions as well as social and networking events.
