Playing with chance
Animation workshop for children with Gitte Hellwig
We invite children aged 9-12 to a free workshop in cooperation with the Kinderkulturmonat and Deutsche Kinemathek!
Using a technique developed by surrealist artists, we will playfully develop crazy characters. Your new figures will be entirely created by chance and based on your own ideas: Animals, people, fantasy figures: anything is possible! Afterwards, we will build these figures out of paper and other materials and set them in motion for a short animated film.
Registration through Kinderkulturmonat is required. Participation in the workshop is free of charge.

Animated Documentary Ethics
Workshop for Professionals by Alex Widdowson
With great power comes great responsibility.” – Uncle Ben
In animated documentaries, the filmmaker has total control over how their participants behave, in what context they appear, and what they look like. There is also a tendency within the genre to tell stories of marginalised communities. We wouldn’t make documentaries if we didn’t feel compassion, but is having good intentions enough? As artists we should hopefully be aware that our creative expressions reveal elements of our unconscious. Our art is also shaped by the dominant ideologies of our culture. So, if we accept that we are not totally in control of what we make, how can we be confident the way we represent others will be beneficial or unproblematic? This practical workshop examines the key ethical issues in animated documentary practice and demonstrates methods for reducing risks associated with representing others.
The number of participants is limited to 10, tickets can be purchased through our website. Participation Fee: 15 €

The role of art during the war
Animation against war presented by Mykyta Lyskov
On February 24, 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine.
Thousands of people lost their lives and homes and were traumatised.
To deal with the pressure and vent their anger, animators began making films about Putin’s death. Trying to reflect the reality that changes every day, the artists created several hundred works that were distributed through social networks. We will look at the most interesting of them as we try to unravel the role of art in times of war.

Activity: CO-MIX
A creative game invented by Stav Levi (TOHU)
CO-MIX is a game where artists and storytellers create different pieces of a visual story, and then connect the pieces together into a completely unexpected result. We start by meeting together and using our preferred tools to each draw a page, then mixing up the pages, giving each participant a gap to fill. Often hilarious, always satisfying, the resulted story is a masterpiece born of different individuals with their unique voice and style.
