INTRO:
Best of Animated Festival Trailers

Centre Français de Berlin
Friday, 01/03/2021 | 5:00 pm

It is the most viewed film at an animation festival and usually also shapes its image. Above all, it is a special honour to be asked to make it as a filmmaker. We are talking about the animated festival trailer, which gives a brief taste of the upcoming festival and is a playground for creative ideas and strong signatures. We have looked around in our archive and those of our friends’ festivals and conjure up a colourful bouquet of animated festival trailers from the hat. A brilliant warm-up for 3 days of FAB 2021.

HERSTORIES
Showcasing female animation directors from Sub-Saharan Africa

City Kino Wedding
Saturday, 10/02/2021 | 5:00 pm

Just over 10 years ago, professional animation seemed to be absent in most African countries. African countries and accordingly “African Animation” was absent from film festivals or exhibitions both within and outside the continent. In the last two years, a lot has changed. Big names like Cartoon Network and Disney have entered into competition for African animation content; with a measurable quota from sub-Saharan Africa. Due to the rapid developments in the African animation industry over the last 10 years, it is predictable that Africa will become a particularly important hotspot in the global animation industry and women animators are not left out. Each of them is paving the way in storytelling and content creation, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

Programme curated by Ebele Okoye.

A ritual can be of cultural, religious or everyday nature. Rituals are not “just there”, but they develop and are changeable: in a family, in a society. Some rituals are performed unconsciously. Rituals give structure and support in a hectic everyday life, they order the daily routine and the relationship to other people. Rituals offer orientation, accompany in transitional phases such as the transition from day to night and facilitate change. Rituals set boundaries and help people stick to rules. They show when to stop certain activities and start something new.

TALK: ANIMATED WEB SERIES
In discussion with Stefanie Sargnagel, Adnan Popovic and Aisha Madu

City Kino Wedding
Saturday, 10/02/2021 | 3:00 pm
(Subsequent to the competition “Animated Series”)

Class struggle, the finer points of defecation, depression and anger at the patriarchy: since “Binge Living: Callcenter Monologues” (2013), the Austrian, enfant-terrible author Stefanie Sargnagel has been strolling through all areas of life without mincing her words, rather casually and often with beer in her hand. No wonder she decided to make a web series with friends around the animator Adnan Popovic in 2018. In this talk, they tell us how they got from single-frame comics to narratives, how the crowdfunding campaign worked out – and how they can bear the fact that there are no more episodes. Also part of the talk is Aisha Madu, who also knows a thing or two about blunt animation: With the web series „Schroom“ she has created a web series in which we are allowed to witness the most embarrassing moments of our fellow human beings.

The talk is subsequent to the competition screening “Animated Series” (Sorry, no single bookings).

LECTURE BY KOLJA SAKSIDA
Case-Study “Koyaa”: From Garage Project to Professional Stop Motion Series

Centre Français de Berlin
Sunday, 10/03/2021 | 1:30 pm

Back in 2001, a talented crew led by creator and director Kolja Saksida began animating short films starring Koyaa. In a garage on the outskirts of Ljubljana, the crew worked on their skills for years and became formative for stop-motion animation in Slovenia. Koyaa developed slowly but surely until the proud presentation of the first original series “Koyaa – Wild Life”, which was broadcast on Sundays on national television in the 2004-2005 season. Thus Koyaa became one of the most important animated protagonists in the country, with a firm place in the history of domestic animation film production.
